How do we establish communication with extra-terrestial life forms?
Humans are an extremely social species. We have evolved our ability for language so that we could communicate our thoughts and feelings to each other. As such, it's natural for us to want to share this information with others. Communication is one of the most basic needs of humans; without it,
there would be no civilization. And yet, how often do you think any extraterrestrial species has ever asked another to explain their own culture or history? I doubt many if any have bothered even asking what they should call themselves! In fact, when people encounter aliens on TV shows like Star Trek, the
aliens don't bother trying to learn much about Earth at all. Instead, they simply try to figure out whether Earthlings are worth killing (or enslaving) before moving on to conquer new worlds. This attitude may seem logical, but it's also very shortsighted. There are lots of intelligent species
out there who haven't had contact with anyone else yet. They might still be far away from developing interstellar travel technology, but some day soon they will probably start looking around the galaxy for other civilizations. If they find none, then humanity will likely be left alone forever. But why not give them a
chance to get to know us first? Why assume that the only reason they're interested in us is because we happen to be the dominant race in this corner of space? Perhaps someday there'll be several different alien races exploring the Milky Way together, and we won't necessarily win every fight against them.
Maybe they'll come up with better ways of fighting than we did, and maybe they'll invent faster ships and bigger weapons than ours. Just imagine if those friendly aliens turned into enemies instead. What if they decide that the best way to make sure they never lose again is to destroy us? You'd
think that they wouldn't care about the damage they caused to us until after they were done conquering the universe. But why wait? Wouldn't it be smarter to prevent future wars by learning from each other now, rather than letting things escalate over time? Imagine if your parents tried to teach you something important
